Saplings Class

The Early Years Unit is made up of Saplings (Foundation Stage 1) and Ash (Foundation Stage 2). Children join Saplings the school year that they turn four and Ash the school year that they turn five.

Saplings come to the Early Years Unit in the morning from 9-12 o’clock and, as they move into Ash Class, they stay all day at school. The school has links with a local after-school club who can offer additional care in the afternoons, collecting from our school. This is for both Saplings at 12 o'clock or Ash Class children at 3pm.

Home visits are an important part of children’s transition into the school environment and are carried out as they start in the Early Years Unit.

The two groups work alongside each other in the Early Years Unit where they have access to dedicated learning spaces both inside and outside. A free flow system enables learning to take place in the outdoors at all times and also in our calm learning space the “Sunshine Room”.

Ash Class children join in with the main school for assembly, singing, P.E and lunch. Saplings go into the main school for small P.E sessions.

We have a daily Saplings Lunch Club, from 12-1pm, where children can stay and have lunch together for a nominal charge to cover supervision.

All planning is based on children’s fascinations and strengths. Recent themes have included ‘On the move’, ‘Farm shops’, ‘Fire’, ‘It’s our world’, ‘Fossils and bones’, ‘Birds’, ‘Book making’ and ‘Superheroes’.
