Exploring our class and getting to know everyone

The children have come back excited and full of stories from their summer holidays. This week we let the children settle back into routine as they explored their indoor and outdoor learning environment. They loved the addition of the mud kitchen that Mr Trundle built for us and made their own mud menus! We created a large role play area in our classroom and set up an ice cream parlour as we figured most children will have enjoyed a frozen treat of some sort over the recent heatwaves. This area will change many times over the course of the year to link with our current topic and grow with the children’s interests.

We have had a big focus on well-being this week and had many circle times to get to know one another and share some things that make us unique. We used the book ‘Only One You’ as our focus story and decorated our own stone fish that we will keep in class to remind us how we are both connected and individual. We also introduced an area in class dedicated to self-reflection and calm which the children have been accessing through the week which has been lovely to see.  The children have designed their own fish and painted their designs onto a stone. They have also written some amazing descriptive sentences about their fish.

Our topic for this halt-term is ‘Famous People’ and we will be focusing on Rosa Parks. Year 2 children will remember learning a little bit out Rosa last year which is why we chose her for our person of focus. They loved learning her story so we know they will be gripped as they get to delve deeper into her significance in both the past and present.

We had a wonderful forest session.  We were exploring the changes that we can see in our forest as we move into autumn, especially after experiencing so much rain recently!

Lastly, a huge well done to all the children for coming back and cracking on! We know it is very tiring getting back onto sleep schedules and early starts but we have been so impressed with how the children have coped and take everything in their stride. We are excited for our year together!
