Let there be light!

This week in Science, we have been learning about how light travels. We worked together to create a model showing how light travels from a light source in straight lines, reflects off objects and travels in a straight line to the eye. We used string to represent the light. We learnt that darkness is the absence of light and then we explored transparent, translucent and opaque objects.

In Music, we listened to a piece composed by Bacewicz, a Polish composer who worked in secret during the Second World War. We could hear how Bacewicz had incorporated Morse Code rhythms into her music. Her music was full of drama and action, just like the times she lived in. As we listened, we thought about a story to match the pace, rhythm and dynamics of Bacewicz’s composition.

There’s a fine line between numerator and denominator! In Maths, we have been learning to place fractions on a numberline, simplify fractions using the highest common factor, and use the lowest common multiple to compare fractions. We also used bar models and fraction walls to consolidate our learning. Then it was time for an arithmetic workout! We enjoyed using an online program to test our skills.

Life is a balancing act! In PE, we were working collaboratively to refine our balances. Great team work all round!

This week in RE, we found out about the core beliefs of Buddhism and learnt about the Five Moral Precepts. We discussed how these are different and similar to the Ten Commandments in the Christian faith. We had interesting discussions about which of the Five Moral Precepts we thought was the most important.

What skills! Oh my, what a great growth mind set we showed during our BMX workshop. We quickly changed ‘I can’t do that’ to ‘I can’t do that yet!’ After a little bit of practise and encouragement, we performed great stunts and amazed ourselves with how much improvement we each made during the session. Mrs Tweedale was incredibly brave too as she, Ms Connolly and Mrs Courtman-Stock let our BMX coach perform a daring stunt over them in front of the whole school!

What a busy first week back! This half term is already looking fun-filled and action-packed.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the fireworks safely!
