This week, Maple Class have continued to enjoy The Odyssey, developing their understanding of the story while responding to a variety of questions and making links between different characters, events and themes.
In History, we explored the different forms of government in Ancient Greece, including democracy, monarchy and oligarchy. The children considered the advantages and disadvantages of each system and discussed how these different forms of government affected people living in Ancient Greece.
In English, our Year 5 children have been writing summaries, letters and diary entries inspired by a range of myths. Through these activities, they have developed their ability to identify key events, capture characters’ thoughts and feelings and write from different perspectives. Exploring myths has also encouraged them to think more deeply about the important messages, values and lessons these traditional stories communicate. Our Year 4 children have been developing their journalism skills by answering questions using accurate punctuation and writing their own engaging and informative newspaper articles using factual language.
In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. They have been applying their knowledge to a range of problems and explaining their reasoning clearly.
In PSHE, the children have been exploring what makes a healthy and positive relationship. Using the idea of a ‘Relationship Cake Recipe’, they identified important qualities such as kindness, respect, trust, honesty, communication and understanding.
We also celebrated European Day of Languages by creating posters inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Languages unite!’ The children explored how languages can bring people and cultures together, linking this to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), particularly the right to express ourselves and to respect the languages, cultures and identities of others. Our posters featured different folk trees, symbolising how, although we may be different, we are also connected and share many things in common.
In PE, the children have been developing their teamwork and communication skills through games and activities. They focused on communicating effectively with their teammates, moving into space to support play and making decisions about when and where to move with the ball.
In Science, year 5 explored the life cycle of a frog, learning how frogs undergo metamorphosis as they develop from eggs and tadpole into adult frogs. Year 4 have been learning what classification keys are and have created some of their own.
