What a brilliant week we’ve had in Year 6. It has been packed with energy, learning, laughter and even a little bit of nail-biting excitement! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
Our biggest highlight this week was our fantastic visit from Steve Frewe, Commonwealth Games gold-medal winning gymnast.
Steve certainly put us through our paces with some high-energy exercises. We jumped, stretched, balanced and moved so much that we definitely raised our heart rates! The hall was buzzing with energy and smiles as we worked our way through his fitness circuit.
We also loved listening to Steve tell his inspiring story about how he fell in love with gymnastics and worked incredibly hard to achieve his dream of representing his country in the Commonwealth Games — where he went on to win gold!
Steve shared an important life lesson with us: when we fall, we get back up again. A brilliant message for school, sport and life.
The grand finale was truly unforgettable…
Steve performed a spectacular leap over Logan, Elowen, Grace and Mrs T! There were a few nervous faces and plenty of excitement as he took his run-up… but what a moment! A nail-biting but spectacular finish to an amazing session.

This week in Science we have been learning all about calories, nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
We explored:
How many calories our bodies need
The types of food that give us energy
How exercise and diet work together to keep us healthy
We also looked at government guidelines for daily calorie intake for both men and women, which led to a fun and thoughtful activity.
We wrote letters of advice to different characters about how they could adjust their lifestyle to stay healthy. One example was an elderly man who normally walks regularly and swims twice a week but has recently broken his arm. We suggested that he might need to increase his calorie intake to make sure his body receives the nutrients it needs for proper healing.
There were some excellent pieces of thoughtful scientific advice!
In English we have been exploring persuasive language techniques in preparation for writing a persuasive travel article about Iceland.
We discovered what makes Iceland such a unique destination and practised using:
Rhetorical questions
Alliteration
Modal verbs
Emotive language
We had great fun crafting exciting sentences to hook our readers. Here’s a flavour of the persuasive writing we have been working on:
Looking for a weekend getaway with a difference? Why not visit nearby Iceland – the land of ice and fire? A land of contrasts and unique experiences for all the family to enjoy. From the vibrant colours of the Northern Lights to stunning black-sand beaches, Iceland has something for everyone.
Some budding travel writers may be emerging in Year 6!
In PE we held our own Year 6 Handball Tournament.
Before the games began, we spent time coaching each other, sharing tactics and practising passing and shooting skills. Then it was time for the real action!
What followed was a series of fast and furious matches, full of teamwork, determination and some impressive goals. The encouragement between teammates was wonderful to see.
We continue to be fantastic reading ambassadors. During lunchtime, we support younger pupils in Key Stage 1, listening to them read and offering encouragement and praise. What wonderful role models, showing patience, kindness and enthusiasm for reading. Well done, Year 6!
Reminder: Next Thursday, 5th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day. Children are invited to bring in their “Story in a Box”—a box filled with a scene that represents a favourite book or story. We can’t wait to see your creative ideas!
Have a lovely weekend!
