This week in Maple Class, we celebrated Science Week through a variety of exciting activities across the curriculum.
In Design and Technology, the children investigated toys that use moving cam mechanisms. They explored different types of cam mechanisms and examined how movement can be created within toys. The children also discussed ways of strengthening structures so that their moving toys would be stable and durable. Using their new knowledge, they created simple designs and persevered with their testing devices, thinking of creative ways to make them work.
In English, linking with Science Week, the Year 5 children wrote balanced arguments discussing whether science should be taught in primary schools. They considered reasons both for and against the idea and organised their writing carefully. The children focused on using causal conjunctions to explain their reasoning clearly and support their viewpoints. Meanwhile, the Year 4 children wrote descriptive diary paragraphs inspired by Gulliver the Giant. They used vivid language to describe thoughts, feelings and experiences, bringing the character to life in their writing.
In PE, the children focused on improving their stamina and strength through a range of fitness activities. They completed exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, star jumps, high knees, and squats. In addition, they used the apparatus and the hanging ropes, developing their upper-body strength, balance and coordination while practising controlled and safe movements. These activities link to Science as the children learn that regular exercise strengthens muscles and helps keep the heart and body healthy.
Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who attended our Learning Together Morning. It was wonderful to see so many of you in the classroom supporting the children’s learning and sharing in their activities.
