Spring is coming… we think!

This week in English, some of our children let their imaginations run wild as they wrote instruction texts on how to trap ogres and unicorns. The children had so much fun thinking about tricky traps, clever strategies, and magical creatures, and they worked hard to include clear, step-by-step instructions with imperative verbs and time connectives. Some of the instructions were full of humour, showing how much the children enjoyed mixing creativity with their learning. Everyone was proud to read their work aloud, making their classmates giggle and imagine the adventures.

In maths, both the year 3 and 4 children continued to explore fractions, focusing on tenths and fractions greater than one. Bar models became an essential tool, helping the children visualise how fractions can add up to more than a whole. Many children loved drawing the bars themselves and seeing how numbers fit together, which helped them understand the value of fractions in a concrete way. They also practised comparing fractions and explaining their thinking, showing increasing confidence with these tricky concepts.

Science lessons this week were hands-on and full of excitement as the year 3 children investigated rocks. They reenacted the process of sedimentary rock formation using plasticine, layering materials to see how pressure and time create these rocks. They also learned about igneous and metamorphic rocks, discovering how heat and pressure change rock types. The children were fascinated by the different textures and appearances, and enjoyed explaining their creations to each other, showing a real understanding of the rock cycle. In year 4 the children put their knowledge into action and researched different living creatures, finding relevant information about their features to classify them.

In Geography, as part of our topic exploring California, and following last weeks work about the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, the children researched the Californian coastline and made posters and leaflets inviting you to live in Malibu. They found out  where it was, what you could do there, why it was popular and what  houses and homes were like in order to create their advertisements.

In RE, the class explored Good Friday and debated whether it should really be called “good.” Using a conscience alley activity, the children lined up and took turns walking between two sides of the room, listening to differing viewpoints, and sharing their own opinions. This sparked thoughtful discussion and helped them understand that perspectives on religious events can vary, encouraging empathy and critical thinking.

PHSE lessons focused on the United Nations and the rights of children. The children played a true-or-false game using a list of supposed rights, then linked the correct statements to actual articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. They enjoyed comparing the ideas and discussing why these rights are important, showing a real sense of fairness and responsibility.

Finally, in poetry, Lime class began learning a new poem by Ogden Nash for ‘Poetry by Heart.’ The children threw themselves into the rhythm and humour of the poem, reciting it with great expression and enjoying the playful language. Many were confident and enthusiastic, showing just how much they can bring poetry to life when given the chance.
