Steam, Silhouettes and Scaly Surprises: Our Brilliant Start to Summer Term!

We’ve had a fantastic start to the summer term in Year 6, and there’s already so much to share!

This term, we are really excited to dive into our History topic, Revolution: Full Steam Ahead?, where we’ll be exploring the reign of Queen Victoria. We began by studying a portrait of Queen Victoria very closely, paying attention to every detail. Working collaboratively, we then started creating a huge whole-class painting of her! Each of us used scaling techniques to enlarge part of the original image, and we had to work carefully together to colour match. It’s been a brilliant team effort—watch this space for the finished masterpiece!

We also explored Victorian silhouettes and had a go at creating our own silhouette portraits. To test how successful we were, we played a game of ‘Guess Who’—and we’re delighted to say that we could identify every single member of the class just from their silhouette. Our observation skills were seriously impressive!

In Maths, we have continued our learning about statistics. This week, we focused on interpreting pie charts and then constructing our own using our knowledge of angles and percentages. Although it was a bit tricky at first—especially learning how to handle the protractors—we showed great perseverance and were very proud to produce accurate pie charts by the end of the week.

In Science, we’ve started our new topic on Evolution and Adaptation. We began by exploring what fossils can tell us about the past, and how palaeontologists use both fossils and trace fossils to make informed conclusions about how animals and plants once lived and behaved. It’s been fascinating to think about life millions of years ago!

Our reading lessons have also got off to an exciting start as we’ve begun the fantastic novel Holes by Louis Sachar—and we are already hooked! We used our retrieval skills to draw one of the yellow-spotted lizards described so vividly in Chapter 8. There were some wonderfully detailed (and slightly fearsome!) illustrations.

On Wednesday, we were treated to a brilliant performance by Lime Class, who took us back in time to the Tudor era. We thoroughly enjoyed watching their dress rehearsal and learning all about Henry VIII, his six wives, and his many achievements—including the Bible being written in English for the first time.

It’s been a busy and exciting week, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the term has in store!
