8.5.2026 Fabulous Fables, Fantastic Facts and Fun-filled Learning

Maple class children have been busy learning across a range of subjects. In History, they explored the fascinating Maya civilisation, learning about their beliefs, everyday life, writing system, and calendars. They developed an understanding of how the Maya recorded time and communicated in their daily lives, and even practised adding and subtracting using Mayan symbols. They also researched key aspects of everyday life, including homes, clothing, food, and farming and made colourful posters with interesting facts.

In English, the children enjoyed reading a variety of Aesop’s fables. They explored the key features of these stories, including the characters and the important moral lessons they teach. Using this knowledge, the children planned and wrote their own fables, showing great creativity and an understanding of how these stories are structured.

In Art, the children worked together in small groups to complete their research on buildings and monuments designed by their focus architects. Their finalised product were posters using Word, where they practised important computing skills such as formatting text, adding images and organising their work clearly.

In Maths, the children focused on comparing and ordering decimals, building their confidence with place value. As part of their MoneySense lesson, they also learned about raising money for charity. They discussed how charities support others and why it is important to plan and budget carefully to make the most impact. This learning linked to the UN Child Article 27, which highlights every child’s right to a good standard of living and helps children understand the importance of supporting those in need.

This week in Science, Year 5 explored the forces of friction and air  resistance through exciting practical investigations. The children designed and tested their own parachutes to discover how air resistance can slow objects down. They enjoyed predicting outcomes, observing how different parachute sizes affected speed, and discussing their findings like real scientists.

Meanwhile, Year 4 investigated tooth decay using boiled eggs to represent teeth. The children placed the eggs in different liquids to observe the effects sugary and acidic drinks can have on enamel over time. They made careful observations and discussed the importance of healthy choices and good dental hygiene.
