Although we only had four school days after the bank holiday weekend, we certainly packed a lot into them!
One of the absolute highlights of our week was our trip last Wednesday to see The Lion King at Lyceum Theatre. From the very first moment of the opening scene, we were completely spellbound! The costumes were breathtaking, the staging was incredibly clever and the acting was phenomenal. There were gasps, smiles and wide eyes all around the theatre — it was truly a magical experience and one we will remember for a very long time.
When we arrived at school on Tuesday morning, we were thrilled to discover our Victorian silhouettes proudly displayed around the classroom. We had enormous fun trying to identify one another and, of course, attempting to spot the sneaky Victorian imposter hidden amongst the portraits! We were also extremely proud to see our completed collaborative portrait of Queen Victoria displayed in all its glory. We are quite certain she will now keep a watchful eye over Year 6 at all times!
In maths, we have been exploring angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. We have been identifying unknown angles and solving increasingly tricky problems. This work has really challenged us to think carefully about shapes and apply our prior knowledge in new ways. There were certainly plenty of “aha!” moments throughout the week.
During PE, we focused on developing our long jump skills. We discovered that powerful arm movement helps to create momentum and that speeding up towards the take-off line — rather than slowing down — can help us jump even further. We also learnt the importance of technique: jumping from two feet when standing still and from one foot when approaching with a run-up. Watch out, Olympics 2040!
In science, we investigated variation within species and discussed why certain variations can be essential for survival. We explored how differences between living things help species adapt to their environments and increase their chances of survival over time.
To round off the week most deliciously, Alice amazed us all with her fantastic baking skills. In honour of “Give Someone a Cupcake Day” (yes, it really is a real day!), she very kindly baked chocolate cupcakes for the entire class. They were absolutely delicious and very much appreciated by everyone. Thank you, Alice, for such a thoughtful and generous treat!
We also ended the week with a very special celebration: the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough! We wrote letters to Sir David to wish him the happiest of birthdays and to thank him for his incredible documentaries, his passion for the natural world and his remarkable ability to make learning about our planet both accessible and entertaining for people of all ages. We hope our letters bring a smile to his face.
Happy Birthday, Sir David!
We would also like to wish everyone a restful and relaxing weekend before our SATs tests begin next week. We are looking forward to welcoming the children for our special Year 6 breakfast on Monday morning from 8:15am — a lovely chance to start the week together feeling calm, confident and ready.
Have a wonderful weekend, get plenty of rest and come back ready to take on the world next week. You’ve got this, Year 6! 🌟
