We have had a very busy and exciting week in Beech Class as we have continued to settle into our new routines and get to know each other. The children have worked incredibly hard and have shown lots of curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for their learning.
In English, the year one children have been getting creative with poetry! The children have been writing their very own poems about autumn.
We thought carefully about what autumn looks, feels, smells and tastes like and collected lots of interesting descriptive words. We then used these words to help us create our poems. The children have been encouraged to say their ideas aloud before writing them down, helping them to develop their confidence as writers.
We have loved seeing the different ideas and descriptions the children have come up with!
In Year 2, we have been developing our character description writing inspired by The Storm Whale. We focused on describing the characters in detail, thinking carefully about their appearance, personality, feelings and actions. The children chose interesting adjectives and phrases to help the reader build a clear picture of the characters, and they worked hard to turn their ideas into detailed sentences. They then checked and improved their writing before completing their final character descriptions, which were proudly displayed on our Wow Wall.
Science has been a great opportunity for the children to become animal experts!
We have been learning that animals can be grouped in different ways according to their characteristics. We looked carefully at animals and considered similarities and differences, including where they live, how they move and what covers their bodies. We also explored animal groups including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. The children enjoyed sorting and classifying animals and explaining why they thought an animal belonged in a particular group. We discovered that animals can sometimes be grouped in more than one way depending on the characteristic we are looking at.
Our Art lessons have been inspired by the wonderful artist Paul Klee.The children explored dots, lines, shapes and patterns, experimenting with different mark-making tools. We discovered that changing the tool we use can create very different effects.
The children created their own Paul Klee-inspired pictures, joining dots with different types of lines and adding patterns inside their shapes. It was fantastic to see them experimenting and making their own creative choices rather than trying to create identical pictures.
In Geography, we have started learning about settlements places where people live and sometimes work. We explored the differences between a hamlet, village, town and city, thinking about the different buildings and facilities we might find in each type of settlement. The children enjoyed drawing and labelling their own examples and beginning to think about the settlement in
We have also been enjoying our outdoor learning sessions. The children have been developing their ability to generate ideas, tell stories and express their ideas in different ways. It has been lovely to see the children using their imagination and working together outside.
In RE, we have been thinking about kindness and what Christians can learn from the teachings of Jesus. We explored the story of the Good Samaritan and discussed what it means to help and care for others. We thought carefully about whether it is always easy to be kind and how we can choose to help, care for and treat others fairly. We have also been thinking about why we have classroom rules in PSHE and how rules help us to learn, play and work together safely and happily.
The children have enjoyed developing their skills through dance, PE, music and singing this week. We have been listening, moving, keeping rhythms and working together as a group.
It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence throughout the week. They have worked hard, made new friendships, explored lots of exciting learning and shown us just how creative and curious Beech Class can be.
