A busy short week!

This week in EYFS, we have been busy exploring and learning across our environment. The children have particularly enjoyed spending time outdoors, where they used their imagination and curiosity to create homes for small creatures, developing both their creativity and understanding of the natural world.

We have continued our learning based on the story Handa’s Surprise. In Ash class, the children explored the meaning of happiness by learning a range of synonyms. They had great fun thinking of different ways to describe how they feel, using words such as “delighted” and “overjoyed.” In Saplings, the children expressed their own experiences of happiness through drawing, creating thoughtful pictures of things that make them feel happy, such as spending time with their families.

In maths, Ash class have been developing their understanding of addition and the concept of ‘more’. They have been using the language of “first,” “then,” and “now” to create simple addition stories, helping to build strong foundations for more formal written methods. The children absolutely loved developing their own “first”, “then” and “now” stories! We enjoyed hearing about how there were first two dinosaurs playing together, then three more came along, which meant now there were five dinosaurs in a big muddy puddle! Saplings have been consolidating their knowledge of patterns by creating repeating ABAB sequences, demonstrating growing confidence in recognising and continuing patterns.

We also enjoyed listening to the story Worrysaurus with Harold, helping us to reflect upon out own wellbeing and how we can support it. We looked at the Wellbeing Wheel, and thought about tools such as physical exercise, mindfulness and connection to help boost our wellbeing.

During PE this week, the children tested their athletics and fitness skills by completing an obstacle course. They ran through agility ladders, weaved in and out of cones, and jumped over hurdles. With each attempt, they challenged themselves to improve their speed and performance.

During our Understanding of the World lesson, we learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly. The children then had the opportunity to create their own butterfly life cycles using a range of materials. They carefully selected from different shapes and sizes of objects, thinking about which materials would work best to represent the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly stages.

The children also considered how best to attach their materials to the paper, choosing between a glue stick and PVA glue and discussing which option would be most effective for sticking both flat and 3D objects. We have displayed their beautiful butterfly life cycles displayed in our classroom.

Forest School was full of fun and magic this week! The children were amazed and entertained by some of Connor’s magic tricks as we based our forest fun and learning around a circus theme.

During their play, the children enjoyed pretending to be clowns and practised their juggling skills with great enthusiasm.

What a fantastic four days of fun, creativity and learning we have had!
