Hot enough to fry an egg?

What a week we’ve had in Year 6! With temperatures soaring, we couldn’t help but wonder: was it hot enough to fry an egg? We certainly thought so — and decided to put it to the test!

Armed with a frying pan and an egg, we set off around the school grounds searching for the hottest spots and surfaces. We carefully investigated where the sun had been beating down the longest before cracking our egg and waiting for the magic to happen. Although the egg didn’t quite sizzle straight away, we certainly did this week!

A huge thank you goes to our wonderful Headteacher, Ms Connolly, who helped keep us cool with a delicious ice cream (or two!) during the heatwave. It was very much appreciated and helped us stay refreshed while we continued our learning.

Inside, with fans twirling away, we brought our Punch and Judy-style puppets to life. We carefully painted facial features, added expression and personality, and then moved on to designing and creating their costumes. There was lots of teamwork as we helped one another with pattern cutting and sewing fabric together.

Many of us challenged ourselves by using a reverse stitch technique so that once the sewing was complete, we could turn the material inside out and neatly hide our stitches. Our puppets are now proudly sporting buttons, pockets and even arms! Next on the agenda: adding hair, hats and any finishing touches needed to complete their unique characters. Watch this space—we can’t wait to show you the finished results!

We have also spent time reflecting on our fantastic residential trip to Gilwell Park at the end of last week. The sunshine certainly smiled on us, although thankfully we didn’t experience the sweltering temperatures we’ve had this week! From crate stacking and zip wires to archery, aeroball, team-building challenges and so much more, we demonstrated incredible resilience, perseverance and bravery. We pushed ourselves beyond our comfort zones, supported one another and achieved things we didn’t think were possible—all while having a tremendous amount of fun.

As another busy week comes to a close. Whether we were experimenting in the sunshine, creating puppets, or reflecting on our adventures at Gilwell Park, we’ve continued to learn, grow and make wonderful memories together.

Have a lovely weekend (and enjoy an icecream or two in the shade)!
