Limericks, Lifeskills and Learning on Two Wheels!

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 6! From cycling on roads to creating Victorian-inspired artwork and performing wonderfully silly poetry, we have certainly packed plenty of excitement into our learning this week.

One of the highlights of the week was our Bikeability course. We thoroughly enjoyed developing our cycling confidence and learning how to ride safely on the roads. Over the course of the sessions, we practised navigating junctions and traffic lights, safely passing parked vehicles and using clear hand signals. There were certainly a few nervous moments at first, but by the end of the course we were all feeling much more confident and independent cyclists. Watch out, Tour de France!

In art, we became inspired by William Morris and created some truly stunning artwork. First, we designed our own motifs before transforming them into repeating patterns by reflecting and rotating the designs. The classroom quickly became filled with colour, creativity and beautifully intricate patterns — we are sure William Morris himself would have been impressed!

Our English lessons transported us back to the Victorian era as we learnt about Edward Lear, the poet and artist who made limericks famous. We loved exploring his humorous illustrations and listening to his wonderfully nonsensical poems. Inspired by his work, we then had great fun writing our own limericks using the AABBA rhyming pattern. The freedom to invent nonsense words and ridiculous riddles led to plenty of laughter throughout the classroom! We also explored the work of modern poet Spike Milligan and greatly enjoyed listening to his delightfully witty poem, ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’. It certainly left us smiling — and perhaps speaking a little nonsense ourselves by the end of the lesson!

We are always looking for ways to improve our environment in Year 6 and this week a group of us decided to brighten up a rather sad-looking planter outside our classroom. With plenty of enthusiasm, teamwork and muddy hands, we replanted it with beautiful summer plants to create a much more welcoming display — perfect for attracting bees and other helpful insects. We are very proud of our creation and look forward to watching it bloom over the coming weeks. What a wonderfully green-fingered bunch we are! 🌼🐝

On Friday morning, we attended our Crucial Crew workshop alongside other Year 6 pupils from local schools. Throughout the morning, we took part in a range of activities designed to help us stay safe and prepare us for the future. We learnt important safety advice from the fire brigade and police, explored different ways of saving and investing money with the building society and enjoyed hearing from the team who run Thirst Café — a café created especially for young people our age.

A real highlight of the morning was watching a performance by secondary school drama students. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to ask them questions about their experiences of moving from primary school to secondary school. Their advice, honesty and reassurance helped many of us feel excited about the next big adventure ahead.

We hope you all have a wonderful half term break and we look forward to seeing you back in school on Tuesday 2nd June.
