With the temperatures soaring and the sun beating down, the team in Early Years got creative planning an exciting and memorable day for the children in place of their cancelled school trip, and what a morning we have had!
We kicked off proceedings with a story that the whole class helped to retell! Playing the part of the food, the children were nibbled, chomped and gulped up by The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We helped order the days of the week and counted out all the food that went into the caterpillar’s tummy.
We then enjoyed some early morning water play outside! We had the sprinkler on, where the children tried to dodge the stream of water by navigating the space beneath it (though we think some might have given in to temptation to get splashed)! We also had fun trying out our aiming skills with water shoot target practice in the shade of the trees. A favourite spot was the water trays where the children enjoyed simply pulling up a chair, dipping their feet in and having a cool chat with their friends. In the midst of all the cooling water play, the children also enjoyed creating a minibeast woodwork craft where they used palm drills to make holes in their discs to attach their pipe cleaner.
With lots of opportunities for water breaks (and even a shady boogie, where we tried out our best “mini moves”), we almost didn’t hear Mrs Lawrence’s phone ring! It was Terrance, a friendly bus driver, offering his services to take us to our forest picnic! We scrabbled together our pennies, paid for our tickets at the ticket office, and had them stamped as we entered the bus! The children took their seats as Terrance told us to buckle up and hold on; it was a rather bumpy ride! We pulled up to the forest and took our seats on the picnic blankets.
We loved eating our picnic together, and were particularly excited to be joined by all of our teachers! Given the lovely breeze in the forest, we had fun catching bubbles as they blew around, and topped off the picnic with a cool ice lolly and a story.
