Poems, Poppies, and Painted Worlds

This week in Beech Class, the children have continued to work incredibly hard across all areas of their learning and have produced some fantastic work that they should all be very proud of.

In English, the Year 1 children have been exploring the beautiful book Where the Poppies Now Grow and have written thoughtful acrostic poems linked to the story. They worked hard to think of powerful words and phrases connected to remembrance, nature and friendship whilst developing their understanding of poetry and using their phonics knowledge to support their writing. Meanwhile, the Year 2 children have been writing imaginative poems about the mischievous Dread Cat. They focused on using adverbs to add extra detail and expression to their writing, helping to make their poems more exciting and engaging for the reader.

In Geography, the children’s artistic talents have truly come to light. As part of our learning about biomes, the children explored different environments around the world, including rainforests, deserts, alpine and polar regions. They have learned about the climates, animals and plants found in each biome before creating some truly fantastic pieces of artwork inspired by their learning. The children took great care with their painting, textures and details, and the classroom has been filled with bright and creative displays.

In PSHE, our focus has been first aid and learning how to stay safe in an emergency. The children discussed who can help us in different situations and learned about the importance of calling 999 in an emergency. They enjoyed role playing making a 999 call and practised answering the kinds of questions they may be asked, such as their name, location and what has happened. The children showed excellent maturity and understanding during these activities.

In Maths, the Year 1 children have been continuing to develop their place value skills. They have been identifying tens and ones, comparing numbers and using practical resources to support their understanding. The Year 2 children have continued their work on money, practising recognising coins and notes, finding totals and calculating change through a range of practical activities and problem-solving challenges.

Well done, Beech Class, for another brilliant week of learning!
