The week in which Year 6 became art detectives, storytellers, sculptors and Renaissance-inspired artists!
What an incredible Art Week we have had in Year 6! Like every class across the school, we based all of our learning around one extraordinary painting: A Muse, Calliope by the Renaissance artist Cosimo Tura. What an adventure it turned out to be!
We began by becoming art detectives, exploring the painting in detail and uncovering fascinating facts about Cosimo Tura, the Renaissance and the powerful Este family. As we looked more closely, we discovered hidden clues, including a blacksmith and a hunter, proving that the longer you spend with a painting, the more treasures you find.
Inspired by Calliope, we stepped into her shoes to write thoughtful internal monologues and diary entries before imagining what might happen if she escaped from her frame. Working together with determination and creativity, we brought this idea to life by creating a striking 3D sculpture of Calliope reaching out from her picture frame using chicken wire.
Our artistic journey continued as we developed our observational drawing skills by sketching the beautiful shell from Tura’s painting before designing and painting our own Renaissance-inspired Muses, each filled with hidden symbols that told our own personal stories.
The exhibition was also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate some of the fantastic projects we have completed throughout the year. We were so proud to share our imaginative Victorian invention projects, along with our articulated puppets made from recycled materials during our inspiring workshop with Little Angel Theatre. Visitors also loved seeing our wonderful Punch and Judy-inspired puppets, complete with the costumes we designed and sewed ourselves. That’s the way to do it!
To round off an unforgettable week, we were delighted to welcome so many families to our Art Exhibition. Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate our creativity, imagination, resilience and teamwork. Seeing parents, carers, grandparents, siblings and friends taking the time to admire our work made us enormously proud. We hope you enjoyed stepping into our artistic world as much as we enjoyed creating it—and discovering that every piece of art has a story to tell.
