We are officially the new Year 6! Can you believe it? And what a fantastic start we have made in Willow Class! It has been couple of weeks of learning, laughter and a few unexpected surprises…
In Maths, we have been exploring place value and working with numbers all the way up to one million. We have also been comparing and ordering large integers (whole numbers). Wednesday’s lesson was particularly memorable when we bounced along to some Jamaican and Caribbean-style Ska music from the 1950s and 60s while tackling those enormous numbers. We never thought we would be dancing our way through Maths, but there we were! There’s certainly never a dull moment in Year 6!
We also enjoyed our first yoga session, stretching, twisting and balancing our way through the sun sequence. We even played Odd One Out using our poses – crab, slide and eagle. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? Apparently, Mrs. Tweedale has developed a secret yoga superpower because she managed to catch rather a lot of us out! She definitely wasn’t peeping… although we have our suspicions!
In History, we travelled back to 1939 to discover why the Second World War began, which countries were involved and who the key political leaders were. We thought carefully about what we can learn from the past and wondered what our world might look like if people really had learnt those lessons. Imagine a world with no more wars! We then brought our learning together by designing information pages for our topic books, combining facts with creativity.
Our Rights Respecting work has also continued as we thought carefully about rights and respectful behaviour. We voted for the articles we would like to include in our class charter this year. It was great to have a real say in the decisions and to think about how having rights also brings responsibilities.
In PSHE, we put our teamwork skills to the test with a tricky challenge: build the highest tower you can using only paper – no glue and no tape! There were plenty of ideas, discussions, negotiations and a fair amount of trial and error. We learnt that teamwork, compromise and listening to others are not always as easy as they sound – especially when there is a very tall tower at stake!
Our Science lessons got off to a hair-raising start as we began learning about static electricity. Using balloons, we explored what happens when positive and negative particles interact. It was brilliant to see our learning come to life – although there may have been a few rather impressive hairstyles along the way!
We’ve had a brilliant start to the term, and we are incredibly proud of everything we have achieved. We’ve learnt, laughed, listened, created, experimented and even danced our way through Maths!
There’s certainly never a dull moment in Year 6. We wonder what next week will bring…!
