Oh Captain, My Captain!

What an exciting week we’ve had here in Year 6! Our learning has been rich, meaningful, and full of opportunities to practice important life skills—all while having a great time together. Here are some highlights of our week.

Democracy at the Heart of Our Learning

This week, democracy truly came alive in our classroom. We explored different articles from the Convention on the Rights of the Child and discussed which rights feel most important to us as learners and members of our school community. After thoughtful debate and discussion, we democratically voted on the articles that we believe should guide our classroom this year. The chosen articles were:

  • Article 2: All children have these rights, no matter who they are.

  • Article 12: We have the right to say what we think and have our opinions listened to.

  • Article 17: We have the right to reliable information that supports our well-being and development.

  • Article 28: We have the right to education.

  • Article 31: We have the right to relax, play, and take part in cultural and artistic activities.

We proudly created a Class Charter based on these rights, all signed and displayed in our classroom to remind us of our shared commitment. Keeping these rights at the heart of our learning is a wonderful way to live the values of a Rights Respecting School all year round.

Election Fever: Our New School Captains

In keeping with our democracy theme, we held an exciting election for our new school captains. We began by exploring the features of persuasive speeches and studied some effective speech delivery tips—like making eye contact, using hand gestures, speaking clearly, and standing with confidence.

A fantastic eleven candidates wrote and delivered their own election speeches in front of the whole school—what bravery and enthusiasm! After careful voting, we are thrilled to announce our new school captains. Drum roll, please…Congratulations to Joe and Otis, our new School Captains, and to Grace and Hugo, our new Vice Captains. We know you will carry out your new roles diligently and with pride!

Mathematics Adventures

Our maths lessons this week have been all about deepening our understanding of place value and scaling numbers. We had fun using place value charts and number lines to make sense of larger numbers and see how they grow or shrink when scaled up or down. It’s been wonderful to see how much more confident we are becoming with these concepts.

PSHE Challenge: Teamwork Tower

Teamwork was put to the test during our PSHE lesson, where we were given a tricky challenge: to build the tallest tower possible using only 20 sheets of paper. No glue, no tape—just teamwork! This task really called on our negotiation skills, collaboration, and resilience. We listened to each other’s ideas, adapted our plans, and cheered each other on. The towers we built were impressive—and the teamwork even more so!

History Explorers: The Second World War

In History, we embarked on a fascinating journey into the past as we explored the Second World War. We investigated when the war started, who the leaders were, what the terms Axis and Allies mean, and what events triggered the outbreak of war. Sharing what we already knew alongside new facts made for lively discussions. It was eye-opening to learn about the many countries involved and the complexity of this significant moment in history.

PE Fun: Hockey Skills in Action

Our PE lesson this week focused on hockey, where we practiced the open position and the reverse dribble. We ended with an exciting match against Mrs. Tweedale and Mrs. Mills, testing our skills at keeping possession of the ball. It was great to see how much we have improved—and how much fun we have working as a team!

Personal Network Hands

Finally, just over a week into the new term, we created Personal Network Hands. These are visual reminders that there is always someone we can talk to if we ever feel worried or need help—whether a friend, family member, teacher, or another trusted adult. It’s comforting to know we’re never alone.

Have a lovely weekend!
