Remembrance, Reflection, and the Power for Good!

We began the week on Monday with Odd Socks Day to launch the start of Anti-Bullying Week. Our classroom was a colourful sea of mismatched socks as we celebrated what makes each of us unique. This year’s theme, “Power for Good,” has inspired some fantastic discussions about the positive powers we all have—kindness, courage, and empathy—and how we can use these to bring about good both in school and beyond. We shared some thoughtful ideas about how small actions can make a big difference.

On Sunday, our school captains represented us superbly at the Little Hadham Remembrance Service, where they laid a poppy wreath on behalf of the school. They conducted themselves with great respect and maturity, and we are all very proud of the way they represented our school community.

Our focus on remembrance continued into the week. On Tuesday, our captains shared the beautifully illustrated picture book The House by the Lake by Thomas Harding during our whole school Remembrance Assembly. They led us in a two-minute silent reflection, allowing everyone to pause and think about the significance of remembrance and the sacrifices made by so many. It was a moving and powerful moment for the whole school.

In Art, we created stunning remembrance pictures using watercolours. We experimented with blending shades to create atmospheric backgrounds before adding striking black silhouettes to produce a dramatic yet poignant effect. The results are beautiful and capture both the sadness and the hope that remembrance represents.

In History, we explored the many ways in which the British people stood firm against the German threat during World War Two. We discussed how measures such as rationing, air raid shelters, and the issuing of gas masks helped to keep morale high. We had great fun trying on a real gas mask to experience first-hand just how uncomfortable and claustrophobic they were—it certainly gave us a new appreciation for what people of the time had to endure! We also examined the bravery shown at Dunkirk and during the Battle of Britain, and we reflected on how these events helped to unite the nation.

In Science, we have begun our new topic on Light. We have enjoyed discovering how light travels from a source in straight lines and reflects off objects into our eyes, allowing us to see. We demonstrated our understanding by constructing 3D model diagrams to show this process, which made for a fantastic hands-on learning experience.

Thank you for supporting our Food Bank Friday and donating tins and jars for the Food Bank. Your generosity is much appreciated.

A reminder that our next Learning Together morning is Tuesday 18th November. We hope you can make it and look forward to learning with you then. Have a lovely weekend.
