27.2.2026 Maple Class: Learning, Exploring and Inspiring

This week in English, the Y5 children focused on developing their descriptive writing skills by choosing and using precise vocabulary to create detailed descriptions. They explored how authors create a specific mood within their writing and practiced including vivid sensory details and figurative language to make their descriptions more engaging and imaginative. TheYear 4 children wrote paragraphs for their autobiographies using the first person, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases to add detail. They organised their ideas into clear paragraphs and used a range of conjunctions and sentence starters to make their writing engaging and reflective.

In Maths, the children worked on fractions, exploring what fractions represent and how they can be used in different mathematical contexts. They also worked collaboratively to answer reasoning questions, which helped them consolidate their learning from previous mathematical areas taught. Through discussion and teamwork, the children explained their thinking, justified their answers and supported one another in solving problems.

In Geography, the children investigated the Earth’s climate and explored areas of extreme temperatures around the world. Through an engaging fact hunt, they discovered interesting information about some of the hottest and coldest places on Earth, making connections to how communities need to adapt to different environments.

This idea of supporting and improving our surroundings linked to our PSHE lesson this week, where Maple Class learned about the role of local councils. The children explored the areas councils are responsible for, such as looking after parks, managing recycling and waste, maintaining local roads and supporting community services. The class completed a Diamond 9 activity, working collaboratively to rank the areas of responsibility and discuss their importance. The learning was linked to the UN Rights of the Child, particularly Article 31, which highlights every child’s right to relax, play and access safe spaces.

Children also had an exciting visit from Steve Frew, as part of the Great Athletes programme. Steve made history by winning Scotland’s first-ever gymnastics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. The children enjoyed a fun and energetic fitness session with Steve, where they challenged themselves, stayed active and learned about perseverance, dedication and believing in their abilities.
