A fun final week!

This week, the children enjoyed hearing about another one of Handa’s adventures, as they delved into another story by Eileen Browne, Handa’s Hen. As with Handa’s previous adventure, the children have been developing their comprehension skills well as they deduce what has been happening around where Handa lives. This time, Handa loses her hen, Mondi, and finds lots of other creatures in her search for her precious hen. The children in Saplings used their magnet eyes to go on an animal hunt, finding all of the animals hiding in the sunshine room! Using the sentence stem, “I can see”, the children were able to orally practice sentence creation. Ash class used the same sentence stem to produce their written sentences, many challenging themselves with descriptive vocabulary or connectives to lengthen their sentences.

In maths, the children in Ash class have been enjoying working with teen numbers as they have been engaging with our ‘number of the day’ challenge on the board. We particularly counting out the correct amount of bees for the flower, using our 1:1 correspondence, and finding the number which was one more or one less than our focus number. Saplings have been learning how to ‘stop at a number’ this week, as they were asked to count out specific quantities from a larger group. Stopping at a given amount can be quite tricky as reciting numbers feels so natural, but Saplings have been doing a brilliant job at applying their counting skills to count out a specific amount!

We continued our learning about healthy habits and discussed the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. We talked about bedtime routines and how they help prepare our bodies for rest. The children enthusiastically shared the different ways they get ready for bed, including washing, brushing their teeth, putting on their pyjamas, and enjoying a bedtime story. They also spoke about cuddling their comfort toys to help them fall asleep.

The children shared their ideas:

“Sleep gives you energy!”

“You need sleep to grow.”

“When you sleep your body is getting better if you have fallen over and hurt yourself.”

During PE this week, the children enthusiastically took part in a game of dodgeball. The matches became very competitive, and the children demonstrated excellent teamwork while developing their understanding of rules, as well as improving their aim and throwing skills.

We also had a wonderful discussion all about the past, as we enjoyed sharing our baby photos with our teachers and friends! We liked talking about how we have grown and changed over the years. Thank you to everyone who sent a photo in to support our discussions, the children really did find a lot of fun in spotting who was who, and noticing how they have changed!

What a final fun week of Summer Term one!
