A freezing first week!

The snowy greeting that welcomed the children back to school at the start of the week made for lots of excited faces! Of course the children enjoyed the snow, noticing its powdery nature was perfect for mark making in. It was very exciting to see what had happened to our toys, now frozen in blocks of ice!

In literacy, we enjoyed hearing our new focus story Jack and the Jelly Bean Stalk (the wibbly nature of this gave the children a chuckle)! Ash class worked hard on their sentence formation, in response to a part of the story, where they remembered how Jack felt when he had to sell his cow. Saplings used their newly learnt sound ‘S’ to hear the initial sound in ‘sad’ and enjoyed having a go at writing this letter shape. It is lovely to see the children returning to school with such an eagerness for writing!

In maths, the children in Ash class began their learning on interpreting and using different representations of numbers. Saplings enjoyed identifying different amounts, recognising ‘one’ and ‘not one’, which has been readily applied to their play during choosing times!

This term also marks the introduction of our weekly philosophy sessions, or ‘Thinking Time’! This week, the children thought about whether they would prefer hot porridge or cold porridge. The responses from partner, group and whole class discussions were really thoughtful, with children suggesting that cold porridge would taste nice and fresh and that if it’s too hot, it would burn you. Others disagreed however and suggested that if it was too hot you could put cold water on it and blow it or you could simply cut it up! It was so lovely to hear such rich, confident and convincing arguments!

During PE this week the children enjoyed developing their ball skills. They all did a fantastic job as they practised throwing, catching and working as a team to kick the ball to each other.
We celebrated the new year this week by creating a ‘new year wish!’ Each child was given a magical wishing stick. The children whispered their wish to the stick, then shared the wish with the class using their confident voices! The children all placed their sticks together in a wishing pot and are excited to work towards the wishes coming true throughout the year!
On Friday we wrapped up warm to go and have fun at Forest School with Connor! We let the rain be our teacher and guide us into the soggy, wet mud, where we stamped to keep our feet warm and listened to the rhythm of the raindrops.

During our Knowledge and Understanding of the World lesson we explored the different seasons and the changes they bring. We discussed the different clothing we wear during each season and the activities we might do. Then we enjoyed painting trees to show how they would look in different seasons.
