Busy learning lots!

The children have been getting stuck in with their learning this week! A particular highlight was exploring channeling and pouring at the water area outside, as the children worked together to connect tubing, funnel water and fill containers to the top!

In literacy, we have been enjoying our story, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Ash thought about the narrow, gloomy cave and how it was “dark”, “gloomy”, “as dark as the night’s sky” and “pitch black”! After generating an understanding of ‘dark’, we thought then about ‘light’, comparing it to the “snowstorm” in the story and to “a very sunny, bright day!” The children then produced linked writing describing the cave, using the ‘ar’ phoneme and reflected upon how they felt about the dark, with some thinking it was quite “exciting” and “mysterious” and others thinking it was “frightening” and “scary”!

In Saplings the children spoke about how the cave was dark inside, exploring the concept of dark vs. light. We tiptoed through the dark cave like the children in the story! Thinking of our own preferences, we began wondering what other creatures might live inside with the bear! We thought there might be unicorns, dragons, dinosaurs and monsters and drew them.

In Maths, Ash class have been exploring ways to make ten with Numicon. Using our Farmer Pete song, the children enjoyed being free to explore the resources, to see which two pieces combined to make ten. Saplings have been looking at shape and pattern, and have shown off their excellent skills at puzzles and matching!

In yoga this week, the children have been learning new ways to help their bodies to feel calm. When we are feeling “a bit mixed up”, a blossom breath seemed to do the trick! A big “huffing” breath helped us through feelings of anger. And curling up into a gentle butterfly pose with soft movements, seemed to help us feel relaxed.

During PE this week, the children continued to develop their ball skills. They practised using a bat and ball to hit it back and forth with a partner. As the session progressed, the children grew in confidence and were even able to keep a rally going!

Forest School was full of excitement and activity on Friday! Some children were busy creating soups and spaghetti in the pots and pans, while others enjoyed relaxing and swinging in the hammock. There was even a pirate adventure taking place!

The children had clearly been inspired by our recent learning about looking after our environment and caring for our oceans. During their pirate adventure, the children explained that they were setting sail to clean up beaches all around the world.

Ash and Saplings class have also been very busy this week using their creative skills to design and decorate their wonderful Mother’s Day cards. They also put their phonics and writing skills into practice as they carefully wrote their messages inside the cards.

What another wonderful week of learning in our class!
