Calligrams and Historic Stories

What a wonderful and busy week we’ve had in Beech Class! The children have worked incredibly hard and shown such enthusiasm across all of their learning.

In English, our Year 2 children have been exploring calligrams. They have especially enjoyed discovering how the shape and style of a word can reflect its meaning. We looked at a range of examples together and talked about how onomatopoeia can help bring writing to life. The children then created their own calligram poems using exciting sound words such as bang, splash, zoom, and crackle. They took great care with both their presentation and vocabulary choices. Once their poems were complete, the children had the chance to perform them to the rest of the class. This was a real highlight of the week, everyone read with such pride, expression, and confidence. Their classmates listened beautifully and gave encouraging feedback, making it a truly supportive and joyful experience.

Our Year 1 children have been busy retelling the well-loved story Peace at Last. We spent time reading the book together, acting out key scenes, and discussing the different sounds Mr Bear hears throughout the night. The children practised sequencing the events carefully and used story language such as first, next, after that, and finally to help them retell it clearly. Many children were able to recall lots of detail and enjoyed joining in with the familiar phrases. Their storytelling has come on wonderfully, and it has been a pleasure to see their confidence grow.

In Maths, our Year 2 children have been learning how to add two two-digit numbers. They have been exploring different strategies, including using number lines, partitioning, and dienes. The children have shown excellent resilience when faced with tricky calculations and are becoming much more secure in recognising the best method to use.

Year 1 children have been working on one-step subtraction problems. They have used counters, number lines, and pictures to help them understand what it means to take away. The children have shown brilliant concentration and are becoming increasingly confident at explaining how they reached their answers.

During History, we continued our learning about the Gunpowder Plot. The children were fascinated as we explored more about the plotters’ secret plan. We discussed what they might have been thinking and saying as they prepared their plot, and the children came up with some wonderfully imaginative ideas. They enjoyed stepping into the shoes of Guy Fawkes and his fellow plotters, using drama and discussion to deepen their understanding of this important event. Their curiosity and thoughtful questions showed how engaged they were.

We have also begun learning our songs for the Christmas show, and the excitement in the classroom is unmistakable! The children have thrown themselves into rehearsals with huge smiles and lots of energy. They are already remembering the words brilliantly, and their singing sounds fantastic. We can’t wait for you to see their hard work come together.

Well done, Beech Class, for another fantastic week of learning. You should all be very proud of yourselves!
