January draws to a close (at last)!!!

This week in Year 3 and 4 has been packed with learning, laughter, and lots of curiosity! In English, we’ve been diving into grammar and the children have absolutely risen to the challenge. We explored adverbial clauses and experimented with where they can be positioned in a sentence to add extra detail and interest. We also learned about verbs and tenses, discovering how an auxiliary verb can work alongside the main verb to help it out. The children surprised us with how much they enjoyed using the formal, technical vocabulary and had great fun playing around with sentences and seeing how small changes can make a big difference.

In maths, we focused on consolidating our multiplication and division skills, building confidence and fluency through lots of practice and discussion. Alongside this, we explored 3D shapes using straws and plasticine, which was a huge hit! The children were challenged to construct shapes with specific properties, and we were incredibly proud of their collaborative attitude. The activity sparked rich, thoughtful conversations about shapes and problem solving, with pupils explaining their thinking and learning from one another.

Creativity was flowing in art as we explored different media to create our own interpretations of Monet’s Water Lilies. Each piece of artwork was truly individual and stunningly beautiful, showing careful observation and imaginative use of colour and texture. In PSHE, we discussed a range of scenarios and rated them for safety before thinking through possible options and responses. The children gave thoughtful advice to the characters in each situation, showing empathy and strong reasoning skills.

Our history lessons took us back to the time of Elizabeth I, where we examined her many portraits and discovered that things were not always as they seemed. By comparing similarities and differences in features and styles, the children learned how portraits act as primary sources of historical evidence and what they can (and can’t!) tell us about the past. Despite the weather, we also stayed active with dance lessons on Monday, energetic benchball on Thursday, and a calming yoga session on Friday.

In science, Year 3 investigated shadows using torches, exploring how the distance between an opaque object and a light source affects the size and appearance of its shadow. Year 4 continued their exciting journey into sound, deepening their knowledge and developing their enquiry skills through practical investigations. In computing, we built sequences of code to move sprites in given directions, effectively solving coding problems while learning how to test and debug our work. It’s been a busy, brilliant week, and we’re so proud of the enthusiasm and teamwork shown by everyone!
