Pumping Hearts, Growing Peas and Parliamentary Debates!

It’s been Science Week, which means we’ve been rolling up our sleeves, asking big questions and getting wonderfully hands-on with our learning.

One of our favourite investigations explored blood flow in the human body. To help us understand how blood moves through our arteries, we set up a fun experiment using red coloured liquid to represent blood and different diameter straws to represent arteries. We carefully timed how long it took for the “blood” to travel through each straw. The results amazed us! Even a tiny change in the width of the straw made a huge difference to how quickly the liquid flowed. It was a brilliant way to see how the viscosity of blood and the width of arteries affect circulation. This experiment helped us understand why it’s so important to look after our bodies and keep our arteries healthy by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There were lots of “wow!” moments and plenty of budding scientists in action.

We also turned our attention to the environment and our food. We explored greener ways of sourcing food, thinking about where our food comes from and how it travels to reach our plates. This helped us consider the impact food production and transport can have on the environment and how we can make more sustainable choices.

To bring this learning to life, we spent some time in the polycrub where we carefully sowed peas. We did a wonderful job of preparing the soil and planting the seeds. Now the waiting begins! We’re very excited to watch them grow and sprout into pea shoots, which we hope to harvest and enjoy eating later on. Farm-to-fork doesn’t get much fresher than that!

In PSHE, we continued developing our understanding of how Parliament works by playing a lively game called Around the Houses. The game is based on the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and it helped us learn about the different roles and responsibilities within each chamber. We worked together to pass Bills, debate ideas and see how the two Houses collaborate to make decisions. We had some excellent discussions and a few very convincing “politicians” in the room!

Wednesday also brought great excitement with the arrival of our Book Fair. Our brilliant School Captains have been busy helping to set everything up and have done a fantastic job welcoming parents and children from across the school to browse the wonderful selection of books. It has been lovely to see so many children excited about reading and discovering new stories.

All in all, it’s been a week full of science, sustainability, democracy and books—a pretty amazing combination! Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
